Asthma is a serious disease causing wheezing, difficulty breathing, and coughing. Asthma in children is very prevalent in the general population with six million U.S. children under 17 being diagnosed with asthma. Chronic cough can indicate several underlying problems such as respiratory tract infections and sinusitis. Over a lifetime, both can cause permanent lung damage. Every year, 1 in 6 children with asthma-related symptoms visits the Emergency Department with about 1 in 20 children hospitalized.
Chronic cough and chiropractic can work hand-in-hand in alleviating symptoms of asthma. Spinal manipulation relieves the stress upon nerves and muscles, thus enabling the spinal cord and surrounding nerves to regain proper functioning. Chiropractic care not only alleviates chronic cough but also a host of other conditions.
A
case study conducted in 2007 reported how chiropractic treatment significantly reduced the symptoms of a young, seven-year-old female patient who had been suffering from asthma for many years. She was prescribed three different inhalers, up to 24 times per day, and she still suffered from a chronic cough and fever. She was also placed on additional medications to handle her symptoms, none of which seemed to alleviate them.
After a chiropractic examination, she was diagnosed with vertebral subluxations and was scheduled for two-to-three adjustments per week. After her first treatment, her symptoms reduced considerably. The patient reported no coughing that first night. After three weeks of treatment, she was no longer having asthma attacks and was able to increase her physical activity.
