Dry Needling

Dry Needling for Muscle Pain and Trigger Points

Dry needling is a technique used by chiropractors to treat pain and movement issues caused by myofascial trigger points. Thin needles are inserted into or near these points to stimulate muscles, causing them to contract or twitch. This helps reduce pain and improve mobility.

How It Works

Overused muscles can enter an “energy crisis,” where reduced blood flow deprives muscle fibers of oxygen and nutrients, preventing them from relaxing. This makes the area acidic and sensitizes nerves, causing pain.

Inserting a needle into a trigger point restores blood flow, flushing the area and releasing tension. The needle prick can also trigger nerve fibers to release endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers. Therapists may move the needle to elicit a local twitch response—a quick muscle spasm—which signals the muscle is reacting.

Some people experience immediate relief, while others may need multiple sessions.
